"you've GOT to be kidding me"

...that's what leah said when the pediatrician told her she was in the 0.23 percentile for weight today. yes, i said zero-point-two-three-percentile. i knew she was little, but come on! we have a new diet regimine for her to follow and will have a weight check in two weeks to see if she has gained anything. the doctor would like to see her in at least the first percentile...i told her that means she only has to be able to beat up one out of 100 babies. that's doable.

if any of you mothers out there have good ideas to fatten this girl up, let me know!
and this is the face she pulled when she found out how large and in charge she was...

(if you're interested, she is now 25.5 inches long...2nd percentile and weighs just under 14 pounds. her head is in the 25th percentile, so at least she's smart, right? hehe. and let's give her a little credit here...i think she lost at LEAST a pound this morning after ryan changed her diaper.)

Lucy was the same way. I had to stop nursing at 9 Mo, which was fine with me. She wasn't getting enough calories with just the little she was eating. (she was also eating baby food, cherrios and other things you give to a baby) But at 9 mo my Dr. had me start "power packing" her food. For example. Crackers with cream cheese, bread and butter, pasta with parmesan chesse anything you can put on that adds more calories. Just think about giving her OPPOSITE of what you would want to eat. I am always trying to REDUCE calories and now I am learning to add to her diet. I still have to do it. She gets carnation breakfast drink mix in her whole milk. Cheese melted on her veggies. Stuff like that. If that sounds similar to what your Dr. suggested for Leah let me know and I can look at the paper he gave me at that appointment. Good Luck. Lucy gained 4 pounds in 6 weeks when we started to do it.

Mare,
Nora was not even ON the growth chart at her 1-year appointment. For height or weight. We did not even have a couple of tenths of a percentage point! Our life has been just like the above person--Carnation Instant Breakfast, cheese, butter, shakes made with avocado, more butter. I do have to remember not to eat her leftovers. My doctor wanted me to just give her a stick of butter to play with in her high chair. Um no. Did you ever think I would be willingly giving my child butter? Oh, the horror. But she is plumping up. Which must be why people are starting to say that she looks so much like me. You are such a good mommy so keep at it. I still get discouraged if she doesn't eat a great meal but she is hovering around 20 pounds now so I'm happy about that! Good luck!

I can't offer you any advice. You're ahead of me in that game, but she's adorable just the way she is. What percentiles did she start at? Just curious what our future holds. It doesn't sound uncommon these days.

My advice is to let Leah come to live with grandshmoj for awhile - we're on the same diet.

Mare,
Were you tiny as a baby? She's going to love being small when she's older! Sounds like an interesting dilemma. You'll have to keep us updated on "Leah: the biggest Gainer" :)

It looks like what she may lack in size, she'll make up for in attitude. Golly that child is cute.
PS- I'm sure she'll grow when she's good and ready. I was in the 5th percentile until I was like 12.

Leah is so darn cute!! My advice is enjoy the tiny baby stage as long as you can!! Even thought Danika was only 6 lb 8 oz when she was born, she weighed in at almost 18 pounds at 4 1/2 months and is 5 inches taller. I am constantly buying clothes because she grows out of them too fast!!!

Hey Maren! Long time, no talk! I found you on Nicole's site and couldn't believe that it was really you! Your little one is adorable! Hopefully we can keep in better touch this time around!
Talk soon

Stella has been in the 3rd percentile or less since she was 6 months as well. I think the biggest thing is to be sure that she seems happy. She is probably like Stella and is just a tiny person. They have smaller bones, etc. Don't be afraid to give her lots and lots of food. Let her eat as much and as often as she wants. And like Heather said, add calories wherever you can. Don't stress too much though. Just make sure she is healthy and happy for her.

I had no idea she was that small! I think her cheeks mask her teeny body. I definitely couldn't imagine giving my baby a stick of butter. Ew.
